Mud Play

The word 'Chikal' means mud and 'Kalo' means play, clearly the primary and the most exciting aspect of this festival is playing with the mud. This ritual symbolizes unity amongst the locals and the celebration of nature. 

Traditional Attire  

Attires are the significant elements of festivities, it visually represents the enthusiasm and spirit of celebration. In Chikal Kalo people wear dhotis or other simple clothing specially selected to get soaked and covered with mud. 

Cultural Performances

Celebrations are incomplete without the expressions of joy via means of dance and music. Like any other festival Chikal Kalo too is accompanied by traditional Goan music and folk dances.  

Religious Ceremonies 

Chikal Kalo also involves various religious rituals. Devotees visit temples and offer prayers for a bountiful harvest and good health. The festival has a strong connection to Lord Krishna, and some rituals involve reenactments of episodes from his life. 

Community Feasts  

Community comes together to relish Goan dsihes and monsoon special delicacies. These feasts are a time for bonding and celebrating the communal spirit of the festival. 

Ritual and Offerings  

Devotees pray and seek blessings and extend gratitude for a flourishing season. Fruits and flowers are offered as part of rituals. 

Games and Competitions 

Various traditional games are conducted to during the festival to add to the Joy of celebration. These include tug-of-war, wrestling, and races, all conducted in the mud, emphasizing fun and community participation.
