At the midnight of August 15, 1947, Indian territories achieved independence from colonial rule. This included all, except Goa!
The state of Goa remained under Portuguese rule until 1961 – 14 long years after India gained its independence from the British.
It wasn't until December 18, 1961, an armed action by the Armed Forces referred to as ‘Operation Vijay’, launched assault, on Portuguese Goa.
It was in the morning of December 19, the Indian national flag was hoisted in front of the Secretariat marking Goa's Liberation!
