St. Francis Xavier was so influential in Asia, particularly in India, that he is regarded as a significant member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuit Order). In 1542, after moving his base to Goa, he began Christian missionary efforts along the western stretch of India. In 1552, St Francis Xavier passed away on Shangchuan Island and was placed at rest there; in 1556, his incorrupted body was returned to Goa.
The sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier which have been preserved remarkably well, are housed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa; a pinnacle of Portuguese architecture completed in 1605.

The Basilica of Bom Jesus presents an extraordinary case of Baroque architecture and is also a unique structural feat within the Catholic Church. The front exterior is graced with meticulous carvings and Corinthian columns, making the building appealing and conventional. St. Francis Xavier’s sacred relics are respectfully preserved in a silver casket, currently in the Basilica. The casket symbolises characteristics from the life of St. Francis Xavier.

Cultural and Historical Insights into Old Goa

Known for its lively trade activities and diverse population, Old Goa was a thriving city during the 16th and 17th centuries, when it served as the administrative centre of Portuguese India. Along with being a major centre of religion, it was also home to many churches, convents, and educational facilities that promoted Christianity. Cholera and plague outbreaks in the 18th century sparked the city’s decline, which finally resulted in the capital’s abandonment and transfer to Panjim. Old Goa is now a preserved historical site, which through its surviving architectural marvels, provides insights into its former glory.
